Writer's pictureWhiskey by the Fire

wish I could write you a song

lost a fight with myself today

some boundaries too tough to obey

when it's just so easy to call you

found some behaviors to replace

the precious chance to see your face

trace those smile lines, so true

so I sat with your favorite glass of bourbon

didn't forget the single cube of ice

picked at the hole in the knee of my jeans

while I stared at the indigo sky

with the time we are taking to evolve

scars from our egos will dissolve

I lie here with the wish

that I could write you a song

but forgive me

the words would only come out wrong

for that wedding, I chose your tie

you held me close, and I just sighed

both knowing it was too soon

at the river, you held my hand

only memories, no demands

witnessed by the sunset in June

so I sat out back to smoke your cigar

recalling which was my favorite kiss

smoothed a balm across my wounds

hoping it's me that you miss

with the time we are taking to evolve

scars from our egos will dissolve

I stay here with the wish

that I could write you a song

but forgive me

the words would only come out wrong
